Recycling Just Got Easier in Roseburg

Blog

Big news for Roseburg-area residents: recycling is getting an upgrade! Roseburg Disposal is rolling out more than 10,000 new wheeled recycling carts, making it easier and more convenient for households to recycle more.

What’s New? Beginning in April, customers will start receiving their brand-new recycling carts right at their homes. Each cart comes with:

  • Wheels for easy rolling to the curb
  • An attached lid to help keep recyclables clean and dry
  • A Recycling Guide with clear, up‑to‑date information
  • A set‑out calendar showing exactly when to put your cart out

You can start using your new cart for recycling pick up the week of May 4, on your regular collection day. Recycling will be collected every other week, so be sure to check the calendar included with your cart.

Why This Matters Bigger, better carts mean fewer trips, less mess and more room for materials that are now accepted statewide. With the right setup and clear guidance, recycling is simpler and that helps keep materials out of the trash and moving through the recycling system the right way.

As Dori John, owner of Roseburg Disposal, puts it, “These new carts and updated information will make it easier for customers to recycle more at home. Please review the Recycling Guide in your packet, follow the set‑out calendar and place recyclables empty, dry, and loose in the cart to help keep materials clean and collections running smoothly.”

How This Upgrade Was Made Possible This investment is supported by Oregon’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program for packaging and paper. A statewide effort that shifts the cost of recycling improvements from communities and ratepayers to the companies that produce packaging and paper products.

Circular Action Alliance Oregon, the nonprofit that is implementing the EPR program, provided nearly $2 million to Roseburg Disposal to support:

  • New recycling carts
  • Additional containers
  • Two new recycling trucks

According to Kim Holmes, executive director of CAA Oregon, “The Recycling Modernization Act is creating a modernized recycling system that shares costs more fairly, supports innovation, and makes recycling easier and more effective for Oregonians.”

Roseburg’s cart rollout is a great example of what that looks like on the ground, real improvements that residents can see and use.

What Goes in Your Recycling Cart? Your Recycling Guide will walk you through everything, but here’s a quick refresher:

Accepted in the cart

  • Cardboard and cartons
  • Paper
  • Certain plastics
  • Metal cans

🚫 Important tips

  • Items must be empty and dry
  • Place recyclables loose in the cart (no bags)

⚠️ Glass

  • Glass is not collected curbside
  • It’s accepted for drop‑off at Douglas County Transfer Sites

When materials are empty and dry, they’re more likely to be successfully recycled, helping the whole system work better.
