New Recycling Carts Arrive for 10,000 Homes in Eastern Oregon

Blog

Recycling is getting easier for approximately 10,000 households in Hermiston, Boardman and Umatilla. In July, residents are receiving new curbside recycling carts as part of Oregon’s Recycling Modernization Act

Under the law, companies that make and sell packaging and paper products help pay for recycling improvements across Oregon. In Eastern Oregon, that means more than $1 million in funding for new recycling carts and collection trucks serving the region.

What goes in the new carts?

  • Follow the accepted materials list included in your cart packet and mailed postcard. Additional information can be found at RecycleOn.org/Oregon
  • Place accepted paper, metal, cardboard, cartons, plastic bottles, buckets, jugs and tubs together in your cart.
  • Keep items empty and dry, and place them loose in the cart.
  • Do not bag recyclables.

The new carts are one part of a larger effort to make recycling simpler and more accessible. Residents also now have access to drop-off RecycleOn Centers at the Sanitary Disposal Transfer Station in Hermiston and the North Morrow County Transfer Station in Boardman. These centers accept some items that do not belong in curbside carts but can still be recycled.

RecycleOn Centers accept empty and dry:

  • Plastic bags and other stretchy plastics, like the wraps around toilet paper or paper towels.
  • Plastic lids from containers such as yogurt, salsa and sour cream tubs.
  • Plastic screw-on caps from items like cartons or bottles. Caps can stay screwed on to plastic containers accepted in your curbside recycling.
  • Rigid plastic package handles, such as six-pack drink carriers.
  • Plastic buckets and pails.
  • Already-shredded paper placed in a paper bag that is stapled or rolled shut.
  • Aluminum foil and trays.
  • Glass bottles and jars.

Together, the new carts and RecycleOn Centers give residents more ways to recycle right, close to home. Recycle with confidence and keep an eye out for more recycling improvements coming to communities across Oregon.
